Program Description

The Teacher Residency in Secondary Education - Social Studies (History) Master of Arts in Teaching is a 30-credit program that can be completed in three semesters. It consists of a mix of face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses along with a rich, immersive, year-long field experience component. Current undergraduate students who are studying secondary education - history PK-12 are the target participants for the Teacher Residency Program. The curriculum plan is based on the combined bachelors to masters program philosophy in that qualified students take 12 hours of graduate coursework their senior year in place of a traditional student teaching experience. During their fifth year, students complete the remaining hours toward their MAT degree. Students are recommended for initial teaching certification after successfully completing their graduate teacher residency field experience and the graduate degree requirements.

Non-Clemson University students interested in the teacher residency program of study should contact the program coordinator. The admission process requires a student to have completed a minimum of 90 specific undergraduate credits or hold an undergraduate degree. An audit of the applicant’s transcript is required to ensure that all prerequisite pedagogical and content coursework has been completed, including PRAXIS II passing scores. In addition, the same screening process used for continuing Clemson undergraduate students is required. Interested applicants who do not meet the prerequisite requirements can be advised with a list of missing coursework or redirected to an existing non-teacher residency MAT program.
