Program Description
The MS degree program in Packaging Science prepares graduates to work independently in the research, development and application of new packaging materials and processes. Students may be accepted with backgrounds related to chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, or engineering. Students with backgrounds in business or graphic communications or other disciplines may also be accepted after completing courses equivalent to the basic science and mathematics courses in the department’s undergraduate curriculum. Each degree program is designed individually to augment the student’s background, to provide a broad understanding of packaging science, and to provide specialized knowledge in the area of the student’s research. Competency in distribution, transportation and engineering technology; food and health care packaging; materials; and packaging design and graphics is expected.
Outcomes, Learning Objectives, and Graduation Requirements
The MS in Packaging Science is not awarded solely on the basis of coursework completed, residence, completion of final examinations, or other routine requirements. The program is designed to prepare the graduate to work independently in the research, development, and application of new packaging materials and processes. A variety of fields of research related to foods, distribution, design, medical and healthcare, polymers, biopolymers, active packaging are available as focus areas of thesis research. The overall curriculum for the MS degree is individually designed to augment the student’s background, and to provide a broad understanding of packaging science along with the selected specialized knowledge in the area of the student’s research. While the student usually focuses their research efforts in one of these areas, the degree requires a general knowledge of these areas within their MS program. Candidates for a master’s degree must pass a final defense at least three weeks prior to the date of the convocation at which the degree is to be conferred. The examination is conducted by your Advisory Committee, but all faculty members are invited to participate. The final basis for granting this degree is the student’s grasp of the subject matter, competence in planning and conducting research, and the ability to express themselves adequately and professionally both orally and in writing. Ultimately, only the student’s advisory committee can certify that they have earned this degree.
