Human Centered Computing, PhD


Program Description


Human Centered Computing (HCC) is an emerging field focused on understanding how to design, build and evaluate computational technologies as they relate to the human condition, and how these technologies affect society. PhD students pursue interdisciplinary research in human-computer interaction, educational software, virtual environments, or development of systems that amplify human cognition, perception, and communication.

The HCC PhD program typically requires two to four years beyond the MS degree, and includes opportunities for interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research.

Summary of Degree Requirements


The PhD in Human Centered Computing is designed to give students comprehensive skills and knowledge to design, create and evaluate computational technologies and a mastery of the methods of research to study how these technologies relate to the human condition and to society. This degree is not awarded solely on the basis of coursework completed, residence, completion of preliminary or comprehensive examinations, or other routine requirements. The final basis for granting this degree is the student’s grasp of the subject matter across a broad field of study, competence in planning and conducting research, and ability to express themselves adequately and professionally both orally and in writing. Ultimately, only the advisory committee can certify that a student has earned this degree. This degree requires a minimum of 30 credits beyond the master’s degree, and at least 60 credits beyond the bachelor’s degree. A minimum of 12 credit hours of non-research coursework and a minimum of 18 hours of dissertation research are required.
