Physics, MS


Program Description


Graduate studies in physics and astronomy may be pursued by well-prepared students in the physical and mathematical sciences or engineering. As the basic physical science, physics offers unique intellectual opportunities. Theoretical, experimental, or computer-simulated studies of the physical universe, ranging from cosmology to quantum physics, and from atmospheric phenomena to biomolecular interactions, are available. The optional research program provides initiation to research in a specialized area of physics. Through a combination of classroom-based and research-based training, the students are prepared for the PhD program or a professional career.

Students seeking an MS degree usually choose to prepare a research thesis, although a non-thesis option is available.

Summary of Degree Requirements


Thesis Option

The thesis option requires 24 credit hours of coursework with at least 12 hours of Physics and Astronomy courses at the 8000 level or above and at least six hours of PHYS 8910 - Master’s Thesis Research , which culminates in the writing of a thesis submitted to the Graduate School. Prior to the convocation at which the student expects to receive a Master’s degree, a final oral examination and thesis presentation must be completed.

Non-Thesis Option

The non-thesis option requires 30 credit hours of graduate coursework, with a minimum of 15 credit hours taken from required core courses, a minimum of three credit hours taken from required elective courses and the remainder taken from the departmental list of approved elective courses. See the Physics and Astronomy graduate handbook for details. At least 15 credit hours must be taken from Physics and Astronomy courses numbered 8000 or above. In order to complete the requirements for a non-thesis Master of Science Degree in Physics, the student must achieve at least a 2.8 GPA in required core courses, in addition to the 3.0 GPA in all graduate-level courses requirement by the Graduate School.
