Program Description


The Master of Arts in English (MAE) offers a comprehensive approach to literary studies, incorporating exploration of literary texts and theory, examination of textuality and modes of publication, and a foundation in methods of research and scholarship. Through coursework, close interactions with faculty, and individual research projects, students infuse their broad understanding of the field of English studies with their own particular literary interests and concerns. The curriculum offers courses in theory, composition theory and practice, literary periods and genres, film, new media, creative writing, cultural studies, and rhetoric.

Students interested in pursuing an MEd in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in English should consult the College of Education.

Master of Arts in English students write a semester-long, potentially publishable thesis paper of 25-30 pages, developed from a seminar paper and presented in a public defense. All students must demonstrate a reading knowledge of an approved foreign language.
