Program Description

Industrial engineers design, install, and improve the complex systems that provide goods and services vital to our society and economy. These systems place unique demands for breadth of preparation on industrial engineers. The Industrial Engineering baccalaureate program prepares graduates to: (1) design, develop, implement, and improve integrated systems that include people, materials, information, equipment, and energy using appropriate analytical, computational and experimental practices; (2) apply information technologies to the practice of industrial engineering; (3) conduct themselves in a professional and ethical manner; and (4) work and communicate effectively with colleagues at every level in the organization.

The traditional arenas for the practice of industrial engineering are the manufacturing facilities of industry; however, many practicing industrial engineers are employed in non-manufacturing institutions such as hospitals, financial institutions, consulting firms and government agencies. In addition to numerous employment opportunities in professional practice, industrial engineering graduates may further their formal education. The Department of Industrial Engineering offers programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Detailed curriculum and department information is available at https://www.clemson.edu/cecas/departments/ie/.

Industrial Engineering Change of Major Policy

To transfer into the Industrial Engineering BS program, students must have completed the following courses with a grade of C or better: CH 1010 , ENGL 1030 , ENGR 1020  (or both ENGR 1050  and ENGR 1060 ), ENGR 1410  (or ENGR 1070 , ENGR 1080  and ENGR 1090 ; or ENGR 1640 ; or CPSC 1010  or CPSC 1060  or CPSC 1110 ), MATH 1060  (or both MATH 1040  and MATH 1070 ), MATH 1080 , and PHYS 1220 .

Paperwork for students transferring from General Engineering is handled by their College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences advisors. As long as a student has a minimum overall GPA of 2.0, and has completed the courses listed above with a grade of C or higher, the student’s change of major request will be processed.

Paperwork for students transferring from any other major is handled by the industrial engineering undergraduate program coordinator. A student must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0, and have completed the courses listed above with a grade of C or higher. Additionally, non-General Engineering students are required to complete a plan of study that documents all courses to be taken until graduation. Click here for the Course Planning Guide.

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Industrial Engineering Program Criteria. Visit the Industrial Engineering program’s website to learn about the Program Educational Objectives and Student Outcomes.

Combined Bachelor of Science/Master of Science Degree

The Department of Industrial Engineering also offers a combined Bachelor’s/Master’s plan in which accepted students may count up to 12 hours of graduate credit (approved 6000- and 8000-level courses) toward both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, with the stipulation that a minimum of 150 credit hours must be earned. To be eligible, the student must have senior standing and a minimum overall grade-point average of 3.4. Most students completing the joint BS/MS program in IE can only double count nine units. Details of the suggested curriculum and program information are available from the Industrial Engineering Department.

NOTES:

  1. If a student has completed all of the courses listed in the General Engineering core, in order to register for a complete schedule, they may need to consider registering for courses required in the engineering degree program they intend to pursue. Students should see the list of possible courses in the Major Specific Coursework section of the General Engineering Program  entry. Major specific coursework is coursework outside the General Engineering core that will count towards an engineering major once a student has officially changed their major. Note that not all courses will count towards every engineering major. The courses listed in the Major Specific Coursework should not be considered alternatives or substitutes for the courses listed in the General Engineering core. If a student takes one of these other courses in place of the courses specifically listed in the General Engineering core, they could delay their eligibility to transfer from General Engineering into one of the degree-granting programs in engineering.

  2. CH 1010 , ENGL 1030 , ENGR 1020  (or ENGR 1050  and ENGR 1060  or ENGR 1510  and ENGR 1520  if substituted for ENGR 1020 ), ENGR 1410  (or ENGR 1070 , ENGR 1080  and ENGR 1090  or ENGR 1640  or CPSC 1010  or CPSC 1060  or CPSC 1110 ), MATH 1060 , MATH 1080 , MATH 2060 , MATH 3110 , and PHYS 1220  must be passed with a grade of C or better.
  3. No student may exceed three attempts, including a W and academic forgiveness (with the exception of a withdrawal from the University), to successfully complete (with a grade of D or better) any of the following required IE courses: IE 2100 , IE 2140 , IE 3010 , IE 3600 , IE 3610 , IE 3800 , IE 3810 , IE 3840 , IE 3860 , IE 4400 , IE 4610 , IE 4670 , IE 4820 , and IE 4880 . Moreover, a third attempt is only granted by a written request to the department chair before the deadline to add a course in a subsequent term.
  4. Students participating in the Combined Bachelor of Science/Master of Science program may count a maximum of 12 credits towards the graduate program.
  5. Depending on a student’s math placement, they may be invited to take part in the General Engineering Learning Community where they complete the following courses: ENGR 1000 , ENGR 1010 , ENGR 1100 , ENGR 1110 , ENGR 1510 , ENGR 1520 , and ENGR 1640 . The combination of ENGR 1510  and ENGR 1520  may be substituted for ENGR 1020 . ENGR 1640  may be substituted for ENGR 1410 .
