Program Description

Landscape Architecture is an expansive and dynamic profession that engages with environments at all scales-from small sites to entire regions. Today’s landscape architects work across a diverse range of project types, including urban and community design, ecological restoration, climate resilience, public parks and greenways, cultural and historic landscapes, stormwater and infrastructure systems, institutional campuses, memorials, residential and therapeutic landscapes, and more. As global challenges around climate, technology, and sustainability grow, the profession continues to evolve, integrating design excellence with environmental and social responsibility.

Landscape architecture is both an art and a science. It requires creative vision, technical knowledge, and a strong ethical foundation. Successful practitioners think critically, act collaboratively, and serve as facilitators across multiple disciplines to address complex issues in the built and natural environments.

At Clemson University, the Landscape Architecture program emphasizes design as a core method of inquiry and synthesis. The design studio is at the heart of the curriculum, with 45 credit hours dedicated to immersive, hands-on learning. Students build from foundational skills in design, theory, history, and communication toward advanced topics such as large-scale planning, regional and urban design, and community-based projects. Supporting coursework in history, ecology, technology, and social theory ensures a well-rounded, interdisciplinary education.

Students typically spend their first two years developing essential skills and knowledge. In the junior year, all students participate in an off-campus, location-based studio experience supported by integrated coursework that expands their understanding of regional contexts. During the final semester of the senior year, students complete a capstone studio, synthesizing their education through an independent project of their choosing.

Clemson’s Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) program is accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB). The program is intentionally broad in scope, preparing graduates for professional practice, licensure, and leadership in the field. Clemson also offers a Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), also LAAB-accredited, through the Richard A. McMahan School of Architecture in the College of Architecture, Arts and Construction.

Students may apply to the BLA program directly or transfer in accordance with university academic policies. All students must meet Clemson’s Academic Eligibility Policy, and those requesting exceptions must seek approval through the appropriate academic review processes.
