Electrical Engineering, PhD


Program Description


Students in Electrical Engineering may direct their programs toward the fields of communication systems and networks, digital signal processing, intelligent systems, photonics and applied electromagnetics, electronics, or power and energy systems.

Summary of Degree Requirements


Students entering the Electrical Engineering PhD program with a prior Master’s degree complete a minimum of 24 hours of letter-graded graduate course work and 18 hours of research beyond the Master’s degree. Direct entry into the PhD program is available for highly qualified students with baccalaureate degrees. Direct entry students complete a minimum of 42 hours of letter-graded graduate course work where at least nine credit hours must be non-ECE courses and not more than nine credit hours can be at the 6000 level. Direct entry students also complete 18 hours of research. Each student in the program must pass qualifying and comprehensive exams before completing and orally defending a dissertation.

PhD students select a major advisor, who, in consultation with the student, chooses additional advisory committee members. The student’s advisory committee must include at least four tenure-track faculty members; three of the members must be from within the ECE department and one must be from outside the department.
