Undeclared Major - Division of Undergraduate Learning

Program Description

The Division of Undergraduate Learning undeclared major is a major, but is not a degree-granting program. This undeclared major offers a structured course of study for students who have not yet decided which degree program they wish to pursue. The course of study for the undeclared major supports students in making timely degree progress while they concurrently explore and compare academic disciplines of interest. DUL academic advisors support students in the undeclared major by helping them determine which courses apply to their major(s) of interest, thus allowing them to make informed decisions about their course schedule each semester.

Students in the undeclared major focus on completing General Education Requirements  and available exploratory coursework for their major(s) of interest. Because not every course a student enrolls in will apply to every major of interest, some courses, depending on the major and any minor a student eventually declares, may satisfy degree requirements while other courses may count as excess electives. Depending on their major(s) of interest, students may be advised to enroll in available exploratory courses during their first two semesters instead of courses satisfying a general education requirement. Some courses have enrollment restrictions which may prevent enrollment by students in the undeclared major.

Students interested in pursuing a major with competitive change of major requirements are advised to create a parallel plan for another major they can pursue concurrently. Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree are advised to enroll in courses that satisfy the modern language requirement. Students interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree are advised to complete additional mathematics or science coursework as required by their major(s) of interest.

To ensure that students make timely progress towards the bachelor’s degree, students in the undeclared major are strongly encouraged to declare a major once they have completed all General Education requirements or have earned 34 credit hours. At this point, the number of courses applicable to multiple majors and in which a student in the undeclared major can enroll begins to decline.

Students who meet academic eligibility requirements may transfer into the DUL undeclared major if they have 45 or fewer total earned credit hours. Total credit hours include all credits transferred from another institution, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and credit by exam, in addition to all credits earned at Clemson University.

To determine the best courses to use as exploratory credits, students are strongly encouraged to review the catalog for the requirements of their desired major(s) and to consult with their DUL advisor. Any coursework selected without or contrary to the advice of the student’s academic advisor may result in excess elective credits. Leisure Skills (LS) courses may not be used to fulfill this requirement.
