Program Description

The Bachelor of Science in Financial Management covers how to plan for and manage monetary resources based on expectations about the future. Finance deals with how to price assets, how to make investment and project decisions, and how financial markets work. The curriculum prepares students for careers in such areas as corporate finance, banking, investments, financial planning, insurance, and real estate. The curriculum also provides excellent preparation for students interested in graduate studies, including law school, accounting or business administration.

The core of the curriculum provides a broad overview of the major fields of finance, including corporate finance, investments, real estate, and financial markets and institutions. Students then have the ability to tailor courses by choosing an emphasis area that focuses on a specific area of finance.

Students who complete the B.S. in Financial Management with an emphasis area of Financial Planning satisfy the education coursework requirement for Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) certification and are eligible to take the CFP® Certification Examination. Some states may have additional requirements for Financial Planners, Financial Advisors, or Investment Advisors. It is imperative students understand the regulations for the state in which they intend to work prior to enrolling in any academic program or course. Students should check the licensing requirements or contact the appropriate licensing boards for the state in which they plan to seek employment.

Students wishing to change majors into the Financial Management program must have a 2.0 or higher Clemson cumulative grade-point average and have completed the Pre-Business program. Bridge students wishing to move into the Finance program must complete all pre-business requirements and successfully meet the requirements to cross the bridge to Clemson.

2* The following sequences are acceptable: MATH 1020 /MATH 2070 , MATH 1020 /STAT 2300 , MATH 1060 /MATH 1080 , MATH 1060 /MATH 2070 , MATH 1060 /STAT 2300 . For each of the four-credit-hour courses taken, one credit will be applied toward the elective credit-hour requirement. Students majoring in Economics must take either MATH 1080  or MATH 2070 , while students majoring in any other business discipline must take STAT 2300 . Students considering a graduate degree in Economics or related fields or considering an actuarial certification should take MATH 1060 /MATH 1080 .

4* Select from ANTH 2010 , PSYC 2010 , or SOC 2010 .

5* Students planning to major in Accounting or Financial Management should take ACCT 2010 . All other students should select a course to fulfill the South Carolina REACH Act Requirement.

If a student has completed all of the courses listed in the Pre-Business Freshman Curriculum, in order to register for a complete schedule, they may need to consider courses required in the business degree program they intend to pursue.

The courses listed in this note should not be considered alternatives or substitutes for the courses listed in the Pre-Business Freshman Curriculum. If a student takes one of these other courses in place of the courses specifically listed in the Freshman Curriculum, they could delay their eligibility to transfer from the Pre-Business program into one of the five degree-granting programs in Business.

NOTES:

  1. Financial Management majors are required to have a minimum grade-point average of 2.0 in all FIN-designated courses (excluding FIN 2010 , FIN 2020 , FIN 2110 , and FIN 4980 ) to graduate. Only the last grade for courses that are repeated is used in computing this grade-point average.
  2. At least 50 percent of the total credits taken in ACCT, ECON, FIN, LAW, MGT, and MKT must be taken at Clemson University.
  3. Three credits of the same variable credit course, such as FIN 4980 , are required to be used to satisfy emphasis area requirements.
  4. No ACCT course already required by the major (ACCT 3030 , ACCT 3110 , ACCT 3120 , ACCT 3130 ) may be used to fulfill an emphasis area requirement.
