Program Description
Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. A Sociology degree prepares students for a variety of professional careers related to social research, public policy, human resources, management, public relations, social services, criminal justice, health services, and other people-oriented positions in the public and private sectors. In addition, the Bachelor’s degree provides excellent preparation for graduate education in sociology, social services, law, health, business, medicine, and physical or occupational therapy. Sociology majors may pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree program. All sociology majors must complete at least 12 credits of sociology or rural sociology courses at the 4000-level. Courses that fulfill methods, emphasis area, and stratification requirements may not double count with minor requirements.
Emphasis Areas in Sociology
Students select one of the following Emphasis Areas:
- Community Studies: SOC 4590 , SOC 4950 , and either RS 3010 or SOC 3310 ; plus nine additional credits selected from all courses offered in sociology or rural sociology not already taken to fulfill requirements.
- General Sociology: Eighteen credits selected from all courses offered in sociology or rural sociology not already taken to fulfill requirements.
- Social Services: SOC 3800 , SOC 4140 and SOC 4950 ; and nine additional credits selected from all courses offered in sociology or rural sociology not already taken to fulfill requirements.
