Program Description
The required course of study in Philosophy consists of the basic curriculum and either the standard Philosophy major or the Philosophy major with a Law, Liberty and Justice Emphasis Area.
The Law, Liberty and Justice Emphasis Area of the Philosophy major consists of the standard Philosophy curriculum with the following special requirements:
- PHIL 1040 and PHIL 3430 are both required for all Law, Liberty and Justice Emphasis Area students.
- Law, Liberty and Justice Emphasis Area students are required to satisfy a Social/Political Theory distribution requirement instead of the Non-Value Theory distribution requirement in the standard Philosophy curriculum.
- Law, Liberty and Justice Emphasis Area students are only required to select 12 credits of additional Major Requirements, rather than the 18 credits required in in the standard Philosophy curriculum.
NOTE: Pre-law students majoring in Philosophy should consult the departmental advisor for assistance with selecting appropriate coursework.
Law, Liberty and Justice Emphasis Area
- PHIL 1000 - Introduction to the Philosophy Major
- PHIL 1040 - Introduction to Law, Liberty, and Justice
- PHIL 3150 - Ancient Philosophy or PHIL 3160 - Modern Philosophy
- PHIL 3430 - Philosophy of Law
- PHIL 4500 - Senior Seminar
- One course selected from CHIN 3120 , CHIN 3130 , CHIN 4140 , PHIL 3050 , PHIL 3120 , PHIL 3130 , PHIL 3150 , PHIL 3160 , PHIL 3170 , PHIL 3180 , or PHIL 4140 .
- One course selected from PHIL 3040 , PHIL 3200 , PHIL 3260 , PHIL 3400 , PHIL 3440 , PHIL 3450 , PHIL 3460 , PHIL 3470 , or PHIL 3480 .
- One course selected from PHIL 3200 , PHIL 3210 , PHIL 3700 , or PHIL 4220 . An alternative course in social or political theory may be substituted with approval of the Philosophy advisor. A course substitution form must be submitted if an alternative course is approved to satisfy this requirement.
- HIST 1720 and HIST 1730
- Twelve additional credits of major requirements selected from any PHIL course. Six of these credits may be at the 1000 level.
- Twelve credits selected from any 3000-level or higher course in a subject other than PHIL. Minor courses at the 3000 or 4000 level may be counted towards this requirement.

NOTE: A transfer course may not be used to satisfy the General Education Global Challenges Requirement. While a transfer course may fulfill other degree requirements, students must enroll in a Clemson course(s) on the Global Challenges list to fulfill the Global Challenges Requirement.
