Program Description


The History major provides students with flexibility to pursue their particular interests in history.

Program Requirements


The History major includes 33 credit hours in history, in addition to HIST 1720  and HIST 1730 ; and GEOG 1010  or GEOG 1030  or GEOG 1060  as outlined below.

History Major -

  • HIST 2990 ; and either HIST 4900  or HIST 4980  
  • 27 additional credits in History. Students must take three hours each of United States history, European history and non-Western history, in addition to three hours of history at the 4000 level (in addition to HIST 4900  or HIST 4980 ). No more than six hours of 1000- and 2000-level history courses (in addition to HIST 2140 , HIST 2150 , and HIST 2990 ) may be counted towards the Major Requirements.

History Major (Public History Emphasis Area) -

History Major (Digital History Emphasis Area) -

Pre-law students majoring in History should consult the pre-law advisor for a recommended program.

Students who change majors into History must have completed at least 12 credit hours at Clemson and have either a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade-point average or have earned a B or better in HIST 1720  or HIST 1730 , taken at Clemson.

Double Major in History/Secondary Education-Social Studies (History)

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Secondary Education-Social Studies  (History) prepares students for teaching at the secondary school level and for graduate studies in History.

Note: To receive a double major in History and Secondary Education-Social Studies (History), the student must complete a change-of-program form to declare both majors.

5 Major requirement totals 27 credits. Students must take three hours each of U.S. history, European history, and non-Western history, in addition to 12 credits of other HIST courses, at least three credits of which must be at the 4000 level in addition to HIST 4900  or HIST 4980 . No more than six hours of 1000- and 2000-level history courses (in addition to HIST 2140 , HIST 2150 , or HIST 2990  [or HIST 2020 , HIST 2140 , HIST 2150 , and HIST 2990  for students in the Public History Emphasis Area]) may be counted towards the Major Requirements.

6 ART 2100 , MUSC 2100 , THEA 2100 , or any humanities course numbered 3000 or higher. The humanities for this purpose include AAH, COMM (except COMM 3640 , COMM 3680 ), ENGL (except ENGL 3040 , ENGL 3120 , ENGL 3140 , ENGL 3330 , ENGL 4850 , ENGL 4950 ), HUM, MUSC, PHIL, REL, THEA (except THEA 3770 , THEA 4870 , THEA 4970 ), WS, and modern language courses.

7 Select any course from the Arts and Humanities (Literature) General Education course list.

8 If HIST 4980 is selected, the Global Challenges General Education Requirement will have to be satisfied by another course. See General Education Requirements .

NOTE: A transfer course may not be used to satisfy the General Education Global Challenges Requirement. While a transfer course may fulfill other degree requirements, students must enroll in a Clemson course(s) on the Global Challenges list to fulfill the Global Challenges Requirement.
