Language and International Business, BA

Program Description

Students in the Bachelor of Arts program in Language and International Business acquire communicative competence in the target language; a familiarity with specific peoples, cultures, literatures, and business environments; and the knowledge and skills to pursue graduate studies or careers in business within their language of specialization.

The Language and International Business program combines modern languages and international business. Students choose a target language (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, or Spanish) and work with an advisor to select coursework for the major requirements that matches their interests and goals.

The language component emphasizes speaking and writing skills, culture, civilization, and business/ technical language. The professional component introduces students to the core content of their preferred coursework focus, as well as to the international dimensions of that focus.

Study abroad of at least one semester at a degree-providing institution in the target language setting is mandatory. Students are strongly encouraged to complete at least one advanced modern language course in their area or to engage in an immersion experience prior to enrolling in study abroad programs. In addition, each student is required to complete an internship with an international company in the United States or an internship, usually in the summer, with a company abroad. Internships must be approved by the Language and International Business Director.

In addition to the curriculum requirements below, students are required, as a condition of graduation, to pass a noncredit language examination and submit a noncredit senior dossier to assess their language competence in various areas. Both assessments take place in the student’s last full semester at the University.
